The Maria Nobrega Foundation
Sustainable Regeneration of Cultural Heritage
1. Cathedral of Salvador Bahia
A Joint Venture Project between the Archdiocese of Salvador Bahia, Fundacao Maria Nobrega and Opus Bahia to restore the High Altar, Lateral Chapels, Sacristi and wooden decorated panels.
2. Sao Joao Batista dos Militares Church
This is one of the few churches in Olinda, it’s restoration is our primary concern. The church was preserved from the fire started by the Dutch in 1631. The Master Plan
3. Sao Francisco Convento
The Convento de Sao Francisco is one of the largest monasteries in Olinda and houses one the finest collections of historical manuscripts and books in Brazil. The Master Plan
4. Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Misericordia
Originally constructed in 1630 as a hospital, and subsequently burnt down by the Dutch colonists in 1631.
5. The Publication of “Olinda – A Universal Heritage”
A number of books on the history of Olinda exist, but they are mainly limited to specific periods of history. The publication of this book, written by noted Brazilian historians, seeks to provide a complete history from the earliest days of the native Brazilian Indians to the declaration of the site as a UNESCO World Heritage Township in 1986.
6. The protection of the Curado Atlantic Rain Forest
Mata do Curado is a 90 hectare Atlantic Rain Forest situated on the outskirts of Recife and some 20 kilometers from Olinda. The site was gifted to the Foundation in 2004 on condition that the Forest, which contains many rare species of flora and fauna, be protected as an eco-tourist facility.
