Olinda, Pernambuco, Brazil

OVERVIEW

Olinda is some 7km north of Recife and was the old capital of Pernambuco State. It was founded in 1537 by the Portuguese, occupied by the Dutch from 1630 to 1654, regained by the Portuguese, and declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986. A programme of restoration, partly financed by the Brazilian and Netherlands Governments, has been initiated in order for the municipality, to comply with the recently conferred title of National Monument. However, many of the buildings are still in desperate need of repair and much work needs to be done to save this historic site, for future generations.

The historic centre covers some 70 hectares on a hilltop site, bordered to the east by the Atlantic Ocean. In perspective, Olinda is a compact colonial township, of narrow cobbled streets leading to traditional market squares.

Olinda has many remarkable examples of 16th century architecture including the Basilica e Mosterio de Sao Bento, established by Benedictine monks in 1582. It is the site of Brazil’s first School of Law and Architecture and encompasses the site of The Declaration of the Abolition of Slavery. In nearby Recife, the first synagogue of The Americas was established in 1654.

There are many 17th century houses with latticed balconies, heavy doors and brightly painted stucco walls. Many are in need of urgent repair if the original fabric is to be preserved.

The Brazilian National Monument Agency has limited financial resources, through a programme funded by loans and grants from The Inter American Development Bank. These funds are managed by Municipalities and State authorities. Tax efficient incentive schemes exist to encourage corporations and NGOs to support the preservation of cultural heritage in Brazil.

It is the aim of The Maria Nobrega Foundation to provide the necessary funding and expertise to restore and regenerate the unique historic and cultural complex of Olinda. This is a long term project, conducted through a series of 3 year programmes.

The projects are combined with a general education syllabus for young people, an apprentice training scheme in traditional building techniques and the relief of poverty through much needed employment in both the construction and tourism industries.

The Foundation works in association with The Brazilian and Netherlands Cultural Ministries, The Vatican, UNESCO World Heritage Centre, HRH The Prince of Wales Charities Foundation, The State of Pernambuco and the Municipality of Olinda.

The Foundation has been honoured with the Patronage of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, President of Brazil and the award of `Ultro Patronata`by The Vatican.

The Maria Nobrega Foundation, has concluded joint venture and co-operation agreements with the Municipality of Olinda and the State of Pernambuco.
