"One Cow Per Family"
Archita / Arkeden - Transylvania, Romania

The village of Archita, once prosperous, is in dire economic straights. Once counting more than 900 head of cattle, it now counts only 50 or more to support a population of 600 individuals of whom 1/2 are Roma(gypsy) and 1/2 Romanian. The loss of milk income has left the village with no other local source of income.

To alleviate such conditions, the Maria Nobrega Asociatia initiated a program entitled 'one cow per family.' Two cows were purchased early in 2010 and another 25 are to be bought. Each, owned by the Asociatia, is given to a family as a source of milk for the family and as a source of income from sold milk. When a calf is born, it is donated in turn to another family.
To build on this initiative, the Asociatia has asked the assistance of Heifer International's Romanian offices in Cluj to develop the program further.
